Driving a vehicle is something most people take for granted, and driving forward is simple enough. Driving in reverse, however, is a bit more difficult. To reverse a truck up a ramp takes skill, but it can be done by yourself so long as the truck is equipped with rear-view and driver and passenger mirrors.
Step One
Align your mirrors so that you can see all sides of your truck. The side mirrors need to show you just a small portion of the truck for locating the vehicle; the rear view mirror should be centered on the tailgate.
Step Two
Put the car in reverse and place your right hand on the bottom center of the steering wheel, with your knuckles pointing towards the roof.
Step Three
Slowly accelerate backwards, going no more than 5 mph. Use the rear-view mirror to make sure you’re centered on the ramp, and the side mirrors to make sure that you’re not about to hit anything on the sides. Do not turn over your shoulder for this technique.
Step Four
Turn the steering wheel with your right hand in the direction you need to correct. If it looks like you need to go to the right in the mirror, by turning your hand to the right, you’re actually moving the front wheels to the left, which adjusts you in the correct direction since everything is reversed.
Step Five
Make small corrections for each turn, and keep your speed down until you’ve got your skills down. Once you’re up the ramp, put the truck in park or drive to move to your desired location.
