The summer is a time so many of us look forward to. It’s a time of sunshine, great weather and social events such as barbecues. Because the weather is so often terrible, it makes the summer extra appealing when it does arrive. But, because people are so excited by the summer they often forget to consider that it can be dangerous.
You see, the summer is a wonderful time of year. But it can also get extremely hot and humid. The problem with this is that dehydration and fatigue set in very quickly. It’s difficult to cope with the heat sometimes. And the worst part about it is that it can creep up on you. So you might not have any indicator of when it’s going to happen. For this reason, it pays to be prepared. Make sure you put measures in place around the house to combat the issues of excessive heat.
Open Windows and Doors
Go around the home and make sure you have all the windows open. This will allow cool air to get in. And it’ll send a through draft around the home. If there’s no breeze, you may want to think about waiting until the evening when it’s a little cooler. Then you can open the windows and get some air in. This way you get the house cooling down just in time for everyone to start coming back inside. There’s nothing worse than having all the windows and doors shut and walking into a musty sweatbox
Air Conditioning
Of course, the ultimate way to combat the sweltering heat of the summer sun is to get air conditioning installed. Now, the great about most air conditioning units these day is that they’re interchangeable. They can be used as air conditioning and as heaters, meaning you have all season climate control at home. It’s a fantastic facility to have, and it makes the long, hot summers all the more bearable. You should use the air conditioning sparingly. Don’t have it on when you’ve got the windows open as the cool air will escape. Try to have it on for a bit at night to keep you comfortable.
Make Ice Lollies
A more unusual idea is to make ice lollies. If you have kids try to get them involved in making the lollies as well. This keeps them occupied and is a fun experiment. You can combine and choose lots of different flavours. All you need to do is get some ice lolly moulds and fill them with liquid or drinks. Once they’ve been in the freezer overnight, they’ll provide a refreshing, tasty snack. It’s a delicious way of cooling down and getting important fluids when at home.
Drink Water
You should never underestimate the need for water. In regular climates, you need to drink a lot of water each day. In the summer when it’s hot it’s even more important. You need to drink two to three litres of water per day. You might even have to drink more when it’s hot. This protects you against the risks of dehydration and heatstroke. It also keeps your body nourished and cools you down. Try to have bottles on standby in the fridge. Another good idea is to half fill a bottle with water and freeze it. Then take it out and fill it with a drink, so it’s like having constant ice cubes in your drink.
As enjoyable as the summer is it’s important to protect yourself and your family from the heat. Every year we hear about people becoming unwell due to being too hot. Use these ideas to counteract that and enjoy a fun-filled summertime.
