Chilli becomes too spicy for some palates when ingredients such as chilli peppers or chilli powder are added in amounts out-of-proportion to the rest of the ingredients. Decreasing the spiciness of chilli with cream-based ingredients allows the consistency of the chilli to remain the same while toning down the flavour. You can reduce the heat of your chilli without having to start from scratch or purchase more vegetables or beans to disperse the spice.
Step One
Lower the hob heat to medium-low.
Step Two
Add 1/3 cup of peanut butter or butter. Stir the chilli to disperse the peanut butter or butter.
Step Three
Taste the chilli to test the spiciness. Add 1/3-cup increments of peanut butter or butter to continue reducing the spicy taste until the chilli reaches your desired flavour.
Step Four
Ladle the chilli into bowls. Stir 1 tsp of cheddar cheese into each bowl or sprinkle cheese on top of the chilli.
Step Five
Add 1 tbsp of sour cream to top each bowl of chilli. The added dairy will further tone down the spiciness.
Step Six
Provide buttered bread with your chilli to sop up the liquid and reduce the heat of the spices. Make milk or yoghurt-based smoothies to serve as a beverage to help mellow the spicy flavour, if desired.
